How To Guide

Sometimes its not as easy as it should be to get your phone to do the stuff you want. That is why JabberDaddy came up with this handy How To guide.

Get POP or IMAP mail on your phone

Several carrier and handset combinations make it possible to access POP3 or IMAP4 e-mail. Depending on your corporate firewall, you might even be able to access your Microsoft Exchange Server. In this example, we use a Motorola A630 phone running on a T-Mobile network connecting to Gmail however the concept is the same for any phone which has an e-mail client and a network carrier who supports it.

You need three things to make this work:

  1. An E-mail capable phone - in this case the Motorola A630
  2. A mobile e-mail service plan - in this case, T-Zones which costs $5.99 per month
  3. An E-mail account - in this case, Gmail (but really any POP/IMAP e-mail account)

TIP: Before you get started make sure your e-mail account has POP support enabled. This is not the default for G-mail so you have to login, go to settings on the upper right portion of the screen. Inside settings, choose "forwarding and POP". You will see your POP status. If its disabled, click one of the checkboxes to enable POP and click Save Changes.

You will need to set up a My T-Mobile account and to do this you will need your mobile phone number. They will send you a password to the phone which you need to complete the registration process. Start by going to the T-mobile website

Once you have a My T-Mobile account, you can proceed to the next step. There are two ways to set up your phone to download your e-mail. The first is to go directly to the phone itself. Launch the e-mail application. If you have not already set up an account, it will tell you that you need to set one up. Follow the screens on the phone to enter your e-mail address and your password. If all goes well, it will just work. We didn't find it to be that simple but maybe you will.

If you can't get your e-mail configured properly using your phone, try using the My T-Mobile website. On the My T-Mobile home page, look for and click the link to SET UP MY E-MAIL. From the My E-mail page, you want to choose "Add New Mailbox". On the Add New Mailbox screen you need to enter the e-mail address of the account you want to access from your phone. You will also need to enter the password for that account. There are two checkboxes: "Remember Me" (when checked you do not have to enter your password to retrieve mail from the phone) and "Notify Me" (when checked you will receive an SMS message telling you when you have new mail). Note that depending on your service plan this could get costly.

When you have done all this, click Next. You will most likely come to a screen which tells you "We were unable to configure this mailbox...". Don't worry, we just need to do some additional mailbox setup. Choose "I use a different e-mail application or will provide the settings to add this mailbox" and click Next.

Now you will need to know your e-mail service settings. For configuring G-mail you need to know:

  • your login and password
  • your user name - when in doubt give your login again
  • server name: pop.gmail.com
  • port: 995 SSL - you should check this box

After you have added this information to the mail configuration screen click Try Again. If all goes well, you will get the message that you have successfully configured your mailbox! On your phone you will also get a message indicating that the mailbox is configured.

Now you can check your mail. On your phone open up the e-mail application, select the account you just created, press the menu key and choose Send/Receive mail. You're in business! Good luck with this folks. Its not easy but once its complete, we think you will find the effort worthwhile.
