Email

Why wait to read and write email from your computer? Most major email providers and major carriers can send you a text message alerting you that you received new mail messages, as well as offering you the ability to read and respond to emails directly through your phone. On the surface, email notifactions or alerts sound great. The service can be configured to notify you only when messages from specific persons arrive and the service is broadly available (anyone that can receive text messages can take advantage of this feature). However, we found the feature fairly limited since you're generally not waiting around for urgent emails, and when they do arrive you have to go to a PC to read them anyway. The real power lies with the ability to use your phone's mobile browser to read and respond to emails. Of course this means that you'll need to pay your carrier something extra for internet access, but this is a small price to pay staying on top of your inbox.

The following is a list of email programs that offer this functionality:

Microsoft Hotmail

Hotmail allows you to access your inbox to read and reply to messages from your phone via SMS or your phone's web browser. Most carriers will charge you extra for this service.

Google Gmail

Gmail doesn't make accessing your email simple. Check out our how to guide for a tutorial on getting gmail to work with your carrier.

Yahoo

Yahoo allows you to access your inbox to read and reply to messages from your phone via your phone's web browser. Most carriers will charge you extra for this service.

AOL

Yahoo allows you to access your inbox to read and reply to messages from your phone via your phone's web browser. Most carriers will charge you extra for this service.
